RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Fighting illness and mourning her grandmother's death, Paula Creamer played her way into contention in the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship. 

"I'm definitely sick," Creamer said. "My grandma passed away and I'm just not sleeping. My body kind of shut down. But last night was a rough night, but other than that, I'm feeling a little bit better." 

Creamer followed her opening 2-over 74 with a 68, playing the final 13 holes in 5 under. 

"I just made more putts," Creamer said. "I had a couple of bogeys early on, but fought back hard and played well on the back nine, which is the front nine." 

The 26-year-old American is winless since the 2010 U.S. Women's Open. The nine-time tour champion came close to ending the long drought last year at Kingsmill, but lost to Jiyai Shin on the ninth hole of a playoff. 

SLEEPING GIANT: Second-ranked Yani Tseng was 3 over after opening rounds of 72 and 75.

Winless in more than a year, the 24-year-old Taiwanese star had a triple-bogey 7 on No. 7 – her 15th hole of the day – after she pulled her 3-wood drive left and out of bounds. 

"One shot costs three more shots, but everything else is fine," Tseng said. "I was hitting driver, but today, because of the downwind, I chose the 3-wood, and I didn't pick the shot I wanted to hit. And I didn't like the target I picked and I just kind of pulled to the left." 

After a good start to the season in Australia and Asia, she lost the No. 1 spot in the world to Stacy Lewis three weeks ago in Phoenix, then was booted out of the Kia Classic a few days later when she overslept and missed her pro-am tee time. 

She has played well at Mission Hills, winning in 2010 and finishing second in 2011 and third last year. 

"I know I can make a bunch of birdies out there," Tseng said. "Today is the past, and I'll learn from today, and I won't make the same mistakes tomorrow."

Notes: Rice Playing in Front of Family

Ray Rice had a big night playing in front of the Ravens' home crowd and his family.


Running back Ray Rice needed only one carry to show what the second-round draft pick can bring Baltimore.

Facing the Minnesota Vikings, Rice took his first handoff and took one step to the left before cutting sharply to the right as center Jason Brown and right guard Marshal Yanda sealed their blocks to the middle. A split-second later, Rice popped off a 42-yard run to move the offense deep within enemy territory.

Even though the Ravens were missing Pro Bowl running back Willis McGahee, who recently had arthroscopic surgery on his knee, Rice kept the ground game moving by totaling 77 yards on only eight attempts.

“When you get in that huddle, you’re the starter and you have to play like you’re the starter,” Rice said in the post-game locker room. “You have to come out there and do the best you can to put the team in the position to score.”

The Ravens did just that five plays later, as Rice punched the ball across the goal line from 6 yards out. The touchdown run also marked the first and only points Baltimore’s offense posted all night.

While Rice knows that he won’t be the starter once McGahee comes back, he is quickly building credibility with his more veteran teammates.

“Ray Rice is an incredible tailback in this league, and he is going to put his mark down,” said quarterback Troy Smith. “He is obviously a guy who can work hard and continue to be positive.

“He is going to start enjoying the fruits of his labor.”

The two-time All-American back from Rutgers had a contingent of supporters in the M&T Bank Stadium crowd to enjoy his hard work, as well.

A big part of the Rice clan made the trek down from his hometown of New Rochelle, N.Y. to catch his first home showcase, including his mother, Janet, with whom the running back professes a close relationship.

“This is my first time playing in front of the Ravens fans, and I knew they were going to support me,” Rice said. “My family came in for the big game, so there were a lot of things going for me this game.

“It’s always great to see my mom out there. She’d my biggest fan. Getting that touchdown at home and with my family meant a lot to me too.”

Landry Leads the Team



With safety Ed Reed out due to a nagging shoulder injury, and Samari Rolle and Chris McAlister also sitting out, Dawan Landry was the elder statesman in Baltimore’s secondary.

Landry responded by leading the team with six tackles and one tackle for a loss. Entering his third season, Landry has matured into one of the leaders of the Ravens’ defense, and it showed Saturday night.

“I was just around the ball,” Landry said. “I was close to the ball. When the plays came my way, I just made the plays.”

Landry teamed with free agent signee Jim Leonhard for the first-string back end. The Ravens also had new additions Frank Walker and Fabian Washington at the corner spots.

The unfamiliarity that comes from so many substituted parts showed on the Vikings’ first touchdown, a 23-yard pass from quarterback Tavaris Jackson to a wide-open Martin Nance in the back of the end zone.

Nance got behind Washington, who thought Landry would be giving help over the top, but a miscommunication caused Washington to pull up short and allow Nance free reign to paydirt.

“Secondary-wise, we just need to focus on our communication,” Landry said. “Those guys - we gave them two touchdowns, one in the first quarter on miscommunication.”

＜meijiカップ　初日◇5日◇札幌国際カントリークラブ 島松コース(6,473ヤード・パー72)＞

　北海道の札幌国際カントリークラブ 島松コースを舞台に開幕した国内女子ツアー「meijiカップ」の初日。9バーディ・ノーボギーの63ストロークと爆発的なスコアをたたき出した古閑美保が2位に4打差をつけ単独首位に立った。

　この日の爆発の要因を「ティショットが安定していたことと、パットが良かったこと」と語った古閑。好調なショットにパットがかみ合い、バーディショーを演出した。63は08年の開幕戦「ダイキンオーキッドレディス」の初日にも出したことがあり、自己ベスト更新を狙い「10アンダー行こうと頑張ったんですけど、16番のチャンスを外してガクッときました」と残念がった。

　2位に大差をつけたが「明日も優勝争いをするなら伸ばさないといけないと思う」と気を緩めず明日もさらにバーディを獲りに行く。昨年の「ヤマハレディースオープン葛城」以来となるツアー13勝目に向け絶好のスタート切った古閑。残り2日間、首位を守りきれるか注目だ。

　宮城県にある利府ゴルフ倶楽部を舞台に国内女子ツアー「ミヤギテレビ杯ダンロップ女子オープン」が開幕。全選手がハーフターンをした時点で、4人が首位に並ぶ混戦模様となっている。その首位には台湾のテレサ・ルー、原江里菜、木戸愛、そして2週連続Vを狙う横峯さくらが2アンダーで並んだ。続く1アンダー5位タイには現在、賞金ランキングトップを走る森田理香子、比嘉真美子、服部真夕ら10人がつける混戦となっている。

　森田と同組で、この大会が国内女子ツアー1年ぶりの出場となる宮里藍は前半1バーディ・1ボギーのイーブンパー15位タイで折り返した。その他15位タイグループには不動裕理、北田瑠衣、諸見里しのぶら13人もつけている。また、宮里、森田と同組になった有村智恵は、1オーバー22位タイでハーフターをした。

＜ミヤギテレビ杯ダンロップ女子オープン　初日◇27日◇利府ゴルフ倶楽部(6,498ヤード・パー72)＞

　宮城県にある利府ゴルフ倶楽部を舞台に国内女子ツアー「ミヤギテレビ杯ダンロップ女子オープン」が開幕した。多くの選手が難コースに手こずりスコアメイクに苦しむ中、1年ぶりの国内ツアー出場となる宮里藍が、この日“69”でラウンド、3アンダーで首位にたった。この日、宮里は前半を1バーディ・1ボギーのイーブンパーでラウンド。後半に入るとエンジンがかかったのか3バーディ・ノーボギーとスコアを伸ばし、トータル4バーディ・1ボギーの“69”、3アンダーでフィニッシュした。過去2回同大会を優勝した宮里、3度目の大会Vに向け最高の発進を切った。

　その宮里と並び3アンダーで首位に並んだのは台湾のテレサ・ルー。ルーはこの日5バーディ・2ボギーでラウンド。早い時間のスタートだったルーは単独首位でフィニッシュ、後続を待っていた。

　首位の2人と2打差の1アンダー3位タイには先週節目の20勝目を挙げた横峯さくらがつけた。この日、横峯は前半2アンダーと好発進を切る。ところが後半に入り2バーディ・3ボギーと出入りの激しいラウンドに、結局トータル4バーディ・3ボギーの“71”、1アンダーで初日を終えた。その他3位タイグループにはイ・ジウ（韓国）イ・ナリ（韓国）、宋ボベ（韓国）、原江里菜、比嘉真美子の5人も並んだ。

　宮里と同組となった賞金ランキングトップの森田理香子は1オーバー14位タイとまずまずの位置で初日を終えた。また、同じく同組の有村智恵は2オーバー23位タイにつけた。

　10年前、東北高校3年生の時にこの大会を制した宮里藍。人生の大きなターニングポイントとなったこの大会に2年ぶりに出場した宮里は初日に4バーディ・1ボギーの69をマーク。風が吹き、グリーンは硬く速いという難コンディションの中、3アンダーで首位タイに立った。

　先々週の「エビアン選手権」の時から手ごたえのあったパッティングがこの日も好調で、「今日はパットに助けられた1日でした」と笑顔で話した宮里。この日のパット数はわずか“23”。11番では8メートル、13番では11メートルとロングパットでバーディを奪取。15番パー3ではティショットをバンカーに入れると、寄きれなかったが距離のあるパーパットを沈めるなどピンチもパットでしのぐことができた。

　5年間使っていたパターのシャフトが移動時に曲がってしまい、「手放したくなかったけど」これまで使っていたヘッドのニューバージョンを昨日から使い始めた。「フィーリングが良くて、いいコロがりで打てました」と、このパター変更が功を奏した。好感触だった新ドライバーも「(有村)智恵から“飛んでますね”って言われました」、実戦でも高い飛距離性能とミスの許容性を発揮した。

　「よっぽど良くないと私はシーズン中には変えませんから」、この時期に投入した2つの新兵器が思い出の大会での好スタートをしっかり後押ししてくれた。思い出の大会で、初日からギャラリーを魅了した宮里。先日、宮城県に本拠地を置くプロ野球球団「楽天イーグルス」がリーグ優勝をはたし同地は大いに盛り上がった。今度は宮里が高校時代を過ごした“第二の故郷”に良いニュースを届ける。

　「ミヤギテレビ杯ダンロップ女子オープン」が宮城県の利府ゴルフ倶楽部を舞台に開幕。東北高校から東北福祉大学に進学し、同県を“第二の地元”と呼ぶ原江里菜が首位と2打差の3位タイにつけた。

　この日は「ティグラウンドとセカンド、グリーンで風が違うことがあって」とかなり風を読むのが難しかった。これには多くの選手が苦しめられたが、「すごく難しかったけど、パッティングが良かったので」と難コンディションの中スコアを崩さずにプレーできた。「先にボギーが先行しても、周りのスコアがそんなに伸びないということが今日分かったので、落ち着いてプレーしていきたいです」。この大会はバーディ合戦よりもガマン比べの試合展開、スコアを落としても慌てず平常心で戦うことを肝に銘じていた。

　原は東北高校で宮里藍の2年後輩、有村智恵は同級生。米ツアーを主戦場としている2人の出場を「メンバー的にすごく懐かしい」と喜んだ。「思い入れのある大会。こういう大会でいいスタートが切れたのは良かったです」。今季はここまで何度か優勝争いにからんできているが、まだ未勝利。08年以来となるツアー2勝目を尊敬する先輩と仲の良い友人の前で挙げることができるか。
